One of the applications of concept mapping is to uncover misconceptions, in the map shown a student was interviewed and shows that a student held the faulty conceptions that the Moon`s rotation changes the shape (phases) of the Moon and that the Earth`s shadows produce those phases- concepts dealing with the relative positions of the Earth and the Moon with respect to the Sun were missing from the student`s conceptual framework (Novak “Learning how to Learn” 1984). Using the conceptual mapping a faulty or incomplete learning was uncovered.
