In his book Learning how to Learn, Novak makes the following quote from Melby-Robb 1982, “we have found that many students classified as <learning disabled> are really bright children who lack the skill and/or motivation for rote mode learning, but who can move to the front of the class when they are given an opportunity for creative, meaningful learning representation of their knowledge”. I wonder how many geniuses are among us that are damned to be excluded by a poor education system. One of the applications of concept mapping is to uncover misconceptions, in the map shown a student was interviewed and shows that a student held the faulty conceptions that the Moon`s rotation changes the shape (phases) of the Moon and that the Earth`s shadows produce those phases- concepts dealing with the relative positions of the Earth and the Moon with respect to the Sun were missing from the student`s conceptual framework (Novak “Learning how to Learn” 1984). Using the conceptual mapping a faulty or incomplete learning was uncovered.
According to Novak, concept maps work to make clear to both students and teachers the small number of key ideas they must focus on for any specific learning task. A map can also provide a kind of visual road map showing some of the pathways we may take to connect meaning of concepts in propositions. After a learning task has been completed, concept maps provide a schematic summary of what has been learned.
According to Novak and Cañas: this concept map shows two different types of learning, rote learning or based solely on memorizing and meaningful learning as proposed by David Ausubel
¿Como sabemos que hemos aprendido un concepto? ¿Como podemos estar seguros que el concepto que estamos enseñando ha sido aprendido? Los mapas conceptuales son una herramienta muy poderosa que nos pueden ayudar a responder estas interrogantes. Un mapa conceptual es una representación gráfica de lo que un individuo entiende sobre un concepto en particular, un mapa conceptual esta formado por una serie de conceptos mutuamente conectados para formar una proposición. Dicho esto veamos un mapa conceptual sencillo (y otro no tan sencillo). Poco a poco iremos desarrollando este tema, por ahora basta decir que los mapas conceptuales pueden ser utilizados en el desarrollo de nuevos productos y servicios, medición de la efectividad de una herramienta de evaluación, y en muchos otros campos. En futuras entregas iremos desarrollando en detalle, por ahora baste decir que los mapas conceptuales son una herramienta que bien vale la pena explorar. How do we know that we have learned a concept? How can we be sure that the concept we`re teaching has been learned? The concept maps are very powerful tools that can help us answer those questions. A concept map is a graphic representation of what an individual understand about a concept. A concept map is made of concepts that are mutually linked to form a proposition. Now let`s look a very simple concept map (and one not so simple). Bit by bit, we will develop this theme, but for now is enough to say that concept maps can be used to develop new products and services, and as a measure of the effectiveness of an tool used in evaluation.
